this book, like some other Kadohata books, is absorbing, creative, and meaningful. the characters are very original (to me anyway).

Sebastian (the werewolf’s) review:
this book is about a girl and her family who are trying to survive WWII.
role models: the man character tries to give in to peer pressure but feels guilty and stops. her brother is loyal.
racism: again, its WWII.
separation: the main character’s uncle and grandfather get taken at the beginning of the book, her cousins go away at the end.
bad behaviour: some kids in the book decide they no longer need to listen to their parents or teachers. one girl lies all the time.
crime: the kids i just mentioned steel some stuff.
violence: for the 3rd time, its WWII, but there’s not as much violence as you would expect. there is a fighting seen and someone kills a chicken.
drugs: some people smoke.
language: derogatory terms are used.
